Previous "upcoming ride" descriptions:

Sat, October 22nd 2011 (South) -- Ojai Loop (Leader: Brian Wood)

We'll be meeting at Cycle Gear in Newhall (24508 Lyons Avenue, map) at 9:00am (gassed up and ready to ride), departing no later than 9:15am (after meet-n-greets, ride instructions, etc.).  From Newhall, we'll head north to CA 126 west to Santa Paula (taking Guiberson & Mountain Rd. to bypass part of 126 and squeeze in a few more twisties), then CA 150 (Ojai Rd) north to Ojai itself.  Leaving Ojai, we'll take CA 33 north to the Ranger station near Lockwood Valley Road where we'll stop for a checkpoint and see whether everyone wants to head up Lockwood Valley to Frazier Park, or extend the loop up to Cerro Noroeste and down through Pine Mountain (where we can stop for lunch at the Screaming Squirrel, or whatever it's called now).  After lunch (whether Pine Mountain or Frazier Park, or wherever), we'll head to toward I-5. Well, we'll actually skip I-5, taking side roads like Gorman Post Road to get to CA 38 (Lancaster Road) east to the Old Ridge Route. The plan is to then take Pine Canyon to Three Pines to Lake Hughes Road and back out to Castaic where we'll wrap things up.

Hopefully the weather will be good - I know the roads will be and the scenery is spectacular. All told the loop is about 200 miles (give or take, depending on which way we go), though time for completion will vary depending on riders, breaks, etc. I hope to see some of you out there!  If possible, please give me the heads-up (e-mail is fine) if you're going to make it, so I know roughly how many to expect.  Thanks!

September 9th - 11th -- (statewide) -- Southern Sierras Ride  (Leader: Rich Mample)

Return to Southern Sierras, Kings Canyon, Sequoia National Parks...  Friday-Sunday, September 9-11

Porterville Best Western
350 W Montgomery Ave, Porterville
Call group desk: (877) 781-7411
Two Queen beds/room (or one King): $75+tax
Ask for rooms reserved for MSTA Rally

For those who want to arrive early or remain longer, same rates apply as available.  Reservations must be made no later than Friday, August 26, 2011, for this rate. We can expect to have all the area roads pretty much to ourselves at this time of year, including the two parks. Every road throughout the Western Sierra within reach of Porterville will be ours; roads we found last year, roads we’ll discover this year.

Last year we all agreed that this area has among the best and most scenic roads in all California. After a day of great riding, gather in the hotel lounge for a cool one with friends. And we have our choice of un-crowded restaurants for Friday and Saturday dinners.

Rich Mample

Sat, July 30th (South) -- Arrowhead (Leader: Brian Wood)

As with last year, we'll have two starting/gathering points -- Santa Clarita (5/14 freeways) and Sunland (off the 210). For those of you meeting in Santa Clarita, we will meet at 9:00am, gassed up and ready to ride, at the Carl's Jr. at the corner of Newhall Avenue and Sierra Highway (20425 Newhall Avenue) in Santa Clarita (just off the 14 freeway). There's a good spot for bikes in the SE corner of the parking lot.  Anyone wanting to meet earlier at Carl's Jr. for breakfast is more than welcome to do so, but please be ready to roll by 9:00am!

From Newhall, we'll take Little Tujunga Canyon Road through to Lake View Terrace and over to Sunland for our second gathering spot, Starbucks at 8349 Foothill Blvd. We should be there no later than 9:45am, so if you are meeting us there, please be gassed up and ready to ride by 9:45am.

Heading out of Sunland we'll ride up Big Tujunga to Angeles Forest. We'll take Angeles Forest to Angeles Crest and on to Newcomb's Ranch.   From there, it's off to Wrightwood and over to Cajon Junction where we'll go up the backside of Arrowhead and through Twin Peaks and Blue Jay to get to the lake itself where we'll stop for lunch (stick close when we go to find parking, it'll likely be a zoo).

During the lunch break we'll discuss routes home.   We'll return by riding down the "front side" via Highway 18 all the way down to San Bernardino, then decide whether to go back through Angeles Forest (the way we came), or perhaps across the 210 to Glendora Ridge and San Gabriel Canyon (believe it or not, something I've never done!).

If you think you're going to be able to make the ride, let me know (v908 at yahoo.com) so we know how many to expect...

Sat, June 4th (South) -- Dual Sport (Leader: Brian Wood)

Okay, we're going to keep this simple and just meet at my place at 9:00am (I have coffee and clean restrooms if you want to get there a few minutes early!) and head out from there. We'll stop for gas on the way up Bouquet Canyon Road, so you don't have to have a full tank when you arrive. By the time we get rolling, get gas, and get up there we should be at the trail head a bit before 10:00am.

If you simply want to meet at the trail head, it's located roughly 3.3 miles south/west of the Bouquet/Elizabeth Lake road intersection, on Bouquet at GPS coords: N34 35.167 W118 18.346. Try to be there a bit early and please, please let me know you're doing that so I know to look for you. Otherwise I'm just counting heads at my house and going from there.

If you've got maps and knowledge of the area, bring it, though if I don't get lost at least once, we're not having fun. Bring snacks, water, whatever you need to tide you through the day. My home address is 25736 Tamarisk Place in Valencia (map). If you need further directions, drop me a line and let me know... See you Saturday!

April 15th - April 17th (statewide) -- "Paso Robles "V" (hosted by: John Button)

Close to Central Park again this year!

Melody Ranch Motel, 939 Spring Street
Call 1-800-909-3911, ask for MSTA rooms
10% AAA discount available at check-in.
10 rooms reserved.

Our fifth annual gathering at El Paso de Robles, CA is all set to roll during the weekend of April 15th, 16th and 17th. Here are a few details:

Friday night at 6:00 pm, we will meet for dinner at the Dragon Palace Chinese Restaurant, located across the street from our event hotel, Melody Ranch. The Ranch only has a couple rooms still available, so if you haven't made a reservation do so now by calling 805-238-3911.

Saturday morning, after a brief gathering in the Melody Parking lot at 9:00 am, we will head off through the winery region west of the city on our way over the mountains to the beach.  Lunch will be in the pleasant town of Cambria after which we'll head back towards Paso, taking in a few more rural roads made for motorcycling.

Dinner Saturday night will be in downtown Paso, a short walk from the Melody hotel.

Paso is waiting. The roads are better than ever. All your friends look forward to seeing you back in Paso for another fun rider's weekend!

Sat, March 26th (South) -- Ortega Hwy. and Beyond (Leader: Brian Tinkler)

Okay all of you complaining that we need more rides down by OC and beyond, here's one for you!  We'll start at the Chevron at the SE corner of I-5 and Highway 74 (Ortega Highway) at 9:00am (map), second departure at 10:00am from The Look Out following a short coffee break there. Puts us at the Rainbow Oaks Restaurant at noon.  Map of planned route available >> here <<.

Sat, February 26th (South) -- Wingin' It (Leader: Brian Wood)

Hard to make plans for this one with so much snow in the mountains (no rides into Angeles Forest or Los Padres) and rain in the forecast.  But, we'll try...

This ride will only take place if weather permits!  You must RSVP via e-mail or phone so I can let you know if we have to cancel.  Otherwise, don't complain to me if you show up (presumably in the rain) and I'm not there!

If the weather cooperates, we'll Meet at Starbucks in Woodland Hills at the corner of Topanga Canyon Road and Ventura Blvd. (5422 Topanga Canyon Blvd.). Please park in the southwest corner of the parking lot (to facilitate gathering everyone up). We'll plan to leave Starbucks no later than 10:00am, so be there by 9:45 or so (gassed, fed, etc.) in order to be ready to roll. Of course, if you want to get there a bit early for coffee and chatter, feel free!

From there we'll head up to Mulholland Highway and take mountain roads (e.g., Old Topanga Canyon? Stunt? Cold Canyon? Piuma?) as the urge strikes and road conditions permit.  We'll probably wind up taking Mulholland or Kanan Dume Rd. to Agoura to find lunch and assess the weather and desire for more miles before deciding on the rest of the ride...

Don't forget to RSVP to let me know if you'll be able to join us on this ride...

Sat, December 4th (North) -- North Ride (Leader: Jeff Smith)

Hosted by Jeff Smith, starting location and ride destination to be announced the week of the ride (check calmsta mailing list and/or this page for updates). Everyone should be at the starting point by 9:00am, the route will be determined by preferences of those who show up (tight technical, fast, or something in between)...

Sat, October 9th (South) -- Reverse Ojai Loop (Leader: Brian Wood)

We'll meet at Cycle Gear in Newhall (24508 Lyons Avenue, map) at 9:00am (gassed up and ready to ride), departing by 9:15am (after meet-n-greets, ride instructions, etc.). For years we've been periodically riding a loop through Ojai going "clockwise" through the route.  This year we'll go counter-clockwise for a change, starting out through local canyons leading to Elizabeth Lake Road and Pine Canyon, up through Frazier Park and Cerro Noroeste Road to Hwys 166 and 33 down into Ojai where we'll find lunch.  From there we'll likely take 150 south to Santa Paula, Mountain & Guiberson roads, etc.

Hopefully the weather will be good - I know the roads will be and the scenery is great. The loop will be a bit over 200 miles so plan accordingly.  Please drop me an e-mail or give me a call if you think you'll be attending, so I know how many to expect.

So, sign up now, folks! The "Porterville Rally" is shaping up to be a good one! Rich Mample has arranged for a Special California MSTA rate at the Best Western Porterville Inn (Fri, Sep 10 thru Sat, Sep 11; check out Sun, Sep 12). In order to get our rate of $75/night and be included in the block of rooms saved for us, you must call the group reservation desk directly at 877-781-7411 and identify yourself as a MSTA member. Sun, July 11th (South) -- Arrowhead (Leader: Brian Wood)

As we did last year, we'll have two starting/gathering points -- Santa Clarita (5/14 freeways) and Sunland (off the 210). For those of you meeting in Santa Clarita, we will meet at 9:00am, gassed up and ready to ride, at the Carl's Jr. at the corner of Newhall Avenue (used to be San Fernando Road) and Sierra Highway (20425 Newhall Avenue) in Santa Clarita (just off the 14 freeway).

Now that Angeles Crest is open (yipee!), we'll take Angeles Forest to Upper Big Tujunga to Angeles Crest and on to Newcomb's Ranch.   From there, it's on to Wrightwood and over to Cajon Junction where we'll go up the backside of Arrowhead and through Twin Peaks and Blue Jay to get to the lake itself where we'll stop for lunch (stick close when we go to find parking, it'll likely be a zoo).

After lunch we'll return by riding down the "front side" via Highway 18 all the way down to San Bernardino before heading back up to Cajon Junction via I-215 and I-15. We'll take 138 briefly to Lone Pine Canyon Road to Big Pines and Wrightwood. Rather than going back through Ft. Tejon/Mt. Emma (and Palmdale), I thought we'd celebrate the reopening of Angeles Crest (again) by returning through Angeles Crest, past Newcomb's, then through Upper Big Tujunga to Angeles Forest Highway and Aliso Canyon Road and Soledad Canyon road back toward home.

If you think you're going to be able to make the ride, let me know (v908 at yahoo.com) so we know how many to expect...

Sat, May 22nd (South) -- SoCal Wandering (Leader: Brian Wood)

Okay, so we have a couple options -- but we won't choose the destination until the morning of the ride.  That is, if you show up you get to vote!  Regardless of the route, we'll meet at Cycle Gear in Newhall (24508 Lyons Avenue, map) at 9:45am (gassed up and ready to ride), departing no later than 10:00am (after meet-n-greets, ride instructions, etc.).  We'll find lunch sometime (hint, either Newcomb's Ranch or someplace north of Ojai), then meander a bit more for the early afternoon before the inevitable parting of ways to head back to our various, spread-out destinations.  If you think you'll be able to make it, let me know (v908 at yahoo.com)!

April 16th - April 18th, 2010 -- "Paso Robles IV"

This year we will be one weekend ahead of the balloon fest, sidecar show, bicycle weekend. At least right now, there are no major events in town on April 16-18 weekend. One of the few weekends where that's true!

Room have been reserved at the Melody Ranch Motel located at 939 Spring Street.  This place is even closer to the central park than last year's hotel. They have nice rooms (better than last year's!) organized around a central parking lot with individual entrances. Reservations can be made at 800-909-3911. Ask for the rooms reserved for the MSTA. Rates are $76 + tax. If you are a AAA member they offer a 10% discount. The hotel has 19 rooms total, we have 12 reserved, and all the others are booked. Get a room early!

Friday dinner will be nearly next door to the hotel at the Dragon Palace King Buffet, 825 Spring St at 6:00 pm.

Saturday we'll enjoy the fabulous area roads--including at least one I'm sure you have never ridden--and visit a historic landmark.

On Saturday night, something a little different. This year dinner will be at The Button Hacienda (a.k.a. John's house). Don't worry, he's not cooking. A local caterer will be providing the eats (including selections for vegetarians). Bring your swim suit (or not) and enjoy the hot tub/spa on the patio in the cool Paso Robles evening.

Bring a friend!

If you have questions, e-mail John Button or call (805) 468-4106.

April 24th - April 26th, 2009 -- "El Paso de Robles la Tercera Parte" or "The Pass of the Oaks Part Three".

In other words, the third annual Paso Robles ride hosted by John Button. Mark your calendars for this great event bringing together riders from all over the state (and even a few from out of state!).

This year we're going for a basic hotel that is closer to City Center Park (easier access to restaurants, daytime activities, evening drinks, etc.) -- not luxury accommodations (but very comfortable).

Relax Inn
730 Spring St
Paso Robles, CA 93446
(805) 238-3013

This small hotel has just 18 rooms total so people need to get to them quickly and reserve a room.  We cannot "hold" rooms for the event and there will be two other events in town that same weekend, so if you want a room, book now!  Ask to reserve for the "Honda Group". The rate is $65/king bed, $75 2-bed/night.  There will be a backup motel, but it's more expensive...

There will be Friday and Saturday dinner arrangements and a welcome packet much like last year.

If you have questions, e-mail John Button or call (805) 468-4106.

Sun, October 26th, 2008 (south) -- "Wing it" (leader, Brian Wood, 661.255.3271)

Okay, our attempt to see the exhibits at the Webster/Taggart museum back in April didn't work out -- so we're going to try it again. This time we'll start at the museum then move on to a ride in the mountains around Ojai. Where will we ride? I don't know, we're going to "wing it!"

No, you don't have to ride a Goldwing.

So, the plan is to meet at the Webster/Taggart museum in Ojai at 11:00am, spend 90 minutes or so viewing the exhibits, find some food, then put our heads together to decide where we want to ride to (quite a few nearby choices). If that sounds good, come out and join us. If you want to meet in Santa Clarita and ride up to Ojai with me, drop me a line and we make plans to meet up.

So, where is the museum? It's at 420 Bryant Circle in Ojai (map). The satellite view in Google Maps shows a dirt lot right where the museum is actually located (building is newer than the satellite image). But, you get the idea.

For those of you not familiar with the museum, it's a premier collection of (mostly) Italian bikes and British race cars. So, meet us at the museum at 11:00. If there are any changes to the plan (I will be confirming the visit one week before the ride), I will post them here. CHECK THIS PAGE BEFORE HEADING OUT FOR THE RIDE!

Oh, and once again I'll be providing a Starbucks beverage for whoever makes it to the end of the ride (the so-called "finishing cup) -- within my meager budget. And, I will have a free membership to HSTA to randomly give away to one non-HSTA rider who attends the event (so bring a friend).

If you have any questions, e-mail me or call me at 661.255.3271.

Sat, July 26th, 2008 (south) -- Arrowhead (leader, Brian Wood)

We will have two starting/gathering points -- Santa Clarita (5/14 freeways) and Sunland (off the 210). For those of you meeting in Santa Clarita, we will meet at 9:00am, gassed up and ready to ride, at the Carl's Jr. at the corner of San Fernando Road and Sierra Highway (20425 San Fernando Rd) in Santa Clarita (just off the 14 freeway). There's a good spot for bikes in the SE corner of the parking lot. Anyone wanting to meet earlier at Carl's Jr. for breakfast is more than welcome to do so.

If everyone's up for a longer ride, we'll head up Angeles Crest to Newcomb's Ranch, then back down Upper Big Tujunga to Angeles Forest Hwy. Regardless of whether we take the excursion to Newcomb's or not, we'll take Angeles Forest to Mt. Emma to Big Pines Highway to get through the forest to Highway 2. Then, it's over to the Cajon Junction where we'll go up the backside of Arrowhead and through Twin Peaks and Blue Jay to get to the lake itself where we'll stop for lunch.

While at Lake Arrowhead for lunch, I'll have a free 1-year membership to give away to one of our non-HSTA riders who joins us for the ride. I'll randomly select one non-HSTA rider from the group and give the membership away before heading off for lunch!

Returning, we'll come down the "front" via 18 all the way down to San Bernardino before heading back up to Cajon Junction via I-215 and I-15. We'll take 138 briefly to Lone Pine Canyon Road to Big Pines through to Mt. Emma. Time permitting, we'll find our way to Lake Elizabeth Road before heading up Lake Hughes Road to Castaic where we'll end the ride. Anyone making it to the end of the ride (whether in Castaic, or Valencia if we pull up short) will be treated to a drink at the local Starbucks (the "finishing cup").

If you think you're going to be able to make the ride, let me know (v908 at yahoo.com) so we know how many to expect...

Fri, May 9th -thru- Sun, May 11th, 2008 -- First Annual Return to Paso Robles (leader, John Button, 805.468.4106)

Paso Robles will once again play host to our Central Coast ride event. After your ride to the area on Friday, enjoying the many possible motorcycle friendly routes from north or south, we'll reacquaint and meet new friends at dinner downtown. Dinner will be at F.McLintocks at 6:30 PM, http://www.mclintocks.com/locations/pasorobles.asp (map). This location is just one block off the town's center park. McLintocks is known for fine steaks and down home atmosphere. Many nice shops are located around the park area including wine tasting rooms, restaurants, desert and gift shops. Motorcycle only parking is on the northwest and southeast corners of the park. It is about one mile from the restaurant but the walk is level, easy and all on sidewalks. A 4-passenger each shuttle truck and/or car, for those that cannot walk, will pull up in front of the hotel at 6:00 PM.

Saturday will find us exploring the fabulous motorcycle friendly roads immediately around the town--limited traffic, good pavement, many turns with ups and downs! For folks that have ridden the area before, I promise to add at least one more road they've not yet explored. Come find out which one. Lunch will be at the Loading Chute in Creston where we can rest, enjoy a cold drink and refill the human "tank." Keep your spurs on 'cause this is a real ranch hand and cowboy spot.

Saturday dinner will be at Big Bubba's BBQ at 6:00 PM, http://www.bigbubbasbadbbq.com/ (map). Bubba's is just around the block from the Adelaide Inn, an easy walk. Also, during dinner at Bubba's we will randomly give away one free 1-year membership to HSTA to a non-member who is present. Hopefully we'll have a good turnout of potential new members who can benefit from this drawing!

Get your reservations in quickly. Paso continues to enjoy rapid growth in tourism so hotel rooms are limited. Contact the Adelaide Inn (www.adelaideinn.com, 805.238.2770) to ask for the HSTA room block at the special rate of $107/night (map).

While you are in Paso, consider coming early or staying an extra day. The area has much to offer with over 300 great wineries, easy access to the coast, and a growing number of fine dining choices. Even if they don't usually ride along, your significant other may find this to be the one event they want to be at this year. Given I live right here in Paso (it doesn't get any better!), I can be of help with your plans, call me at 805.468.4106 or e-mail: john@buttonhome.org.

Come on. You know you want to. Get Friday off. Make the room arrangements. Wash the bike. And, ride to Paso. You'll be stuck hearing everyone else's stories all year if you don't make it. See you in May in Paso!
